Faction Guide - Stranger in a Strange Land

"He walks amongst us, but he is not one of us."

Description

Create a Faction Guide with a goal of Raising ALL PLAYABLE RACES Town Factions with a focus on the fastest/easiest/repeatable quests. As well as Tips, Tricks, Strategies etc.

  • This guide is designed towards Oldworld playable race factions and Iksars in Kunark but will not include Velious. There are already a lot of useful pages on Velious Class Armor if that is your fancy.
  • Faction Tricks - I recommend reading and reviewing this other page. It has excellent info and methods that can help you can get around many faction requirements to begin quest turn ins. However, this adds to the cost of time/value/effort.
If you are in an Outdoor zone, ideally you find a druid ask for Group Wolf form if possible. This is the "cheapest" option before using some clicky illusion item
  • If you can find buy illusion go for it. But this guide is kind of assuming you are a solo melee worst case scenario. I see the illusion option as more of a one-time or last resort need to raise from KOS to Dubious threshold.
    • The most important point of that Faction Tricks page is getting to Indifferent or better can allow you do many quest turn ins even if you are KOS.
Sneak can get you to Indifferent and Invis to get in position and after handing the items in the trade window, but before hitting accept, invis again to get back to Indifferent (Invis will break on handing items into trade window, but not on the final turn-in).
  • Invisibility easiest to get by buying single charge Cloudy Potion for 10p each. If possible, buy two Ring of Shadows which are not Lore so you can Recharge them yourself. In addition there is a Larrikan's Mask I like with 10 charges but it is Lore so more annoying to recharge. Ideally you find a friend willing to invis you so you dont have to buy/spend charges. For the very rich, you can get your Ring of Stealthy Travel
  • Position and Line of Sight- Another method If possible, stand behind a wall or doorway and change the camera Shift T opens the Title Window but allows free camera and scroll to find a viewpoint that allows you to see the NPC around the corner/wall. Then you can open a trade window by clicking on that NPC from that view to turn in your quest item even if they are scowling KOS. Then, Invis or Sneak again and /con to verify they consider you Indifferently. Click accept and you should get the reward. There are some quests that require higher faction but many work at neutral. In these cases if it fails, you will usually get a corresponding reply from the NPC that you aren't high enough "You must prove your self more" or nothing happens at all but at least they will still not aggro if you are out of sight.
*Every town (except DE WAR?) seems to have at least one quest or method that will work either illusion, sneak, invis to allow you repair crucial town factions.
If there is no wall or object to hide behind, with Sneak you can still do some turn-ins while KOS standing right behind them.
  • You can use Social Hotkeys to input several commands in rapid succession such as the message to trigger the quest followed by Feign Death before you get aggro.

Example:

/stand
/pause 1
/say <quest trigger text>
/doability X (Feign Death)
  • Besides my subconscious desire to be liked by everyone, I argue for these other useful benefits:
    • Vendor and Bank everywhere in every town without requiring Sneak, FD or Spells.
    • Turn in any quests - examples Reaper of the Dead and Leatherfoot Raider Skullcap
    • Traveling Safely - Use underground evil tunnels and guildmasters anywhere. Seriously explore all the basements of East Freeport without fear of dying. Safe passage across zones that have wanderers of opposing factions (Toxxulia especially)
    • The higher you raise all these factions the less worry you can have when/if you decide to kill any of them.
    • If you are already a healthy distance in to Warmly or Ally faction, you could potentially kill numerous of them and still maintain that status.
    • If you gain the knowledge of how easy is to repair certain factions the game opens up more opportunities for hunting, questing, exping. Stop being afraid of negative hits when you know what they are and how to fix them if you really needed to.
    • Useful for when helping friends or guildees with a quest not needing to worry about faction dings, clearing to an epic npc or just farming guards to get someone onto Freeport faction.
      • For example, when non KOS you can Hail Lock certain wandering NPCs and hold them for friend. Either to hold them in place, or to prevent the NPC from running off and dying or attacking anyone who is KOS.

Faction Dos and Donts

(Things I know now and wish I knew then.)

  • CLICKING - When clicking stacked items to hand in, use Ctrl + Click to pickup 1, and Shift + Click to pickup a Stack. This also works when Buying/Selling from a Merchant. and Also works with Coin.
  • Use centerscreen - Is also command you can bind to a hotkey in the EQ Options under 'Keys' under Commands category. This can initiate handing in an item with the NPC closest to the center of your screen.
  • /AUTOINVENTORY - Is a command you can bind to a hotkey - It works just like when you drag items over the center of your inventory (class symbol) and it goes to next available open inventory slot (or armor slot if empty and its equippable) and even fill existing stacks, or start a new stack. This works well while training Fletching, in which each craft of Arrows may be a slightly different Range and this command can sort them easily.
Helpful for when the quest reward also hands you something and you dont care which bag it goes into just to quickly get it off your cursor to pickup the next item for turn in. Example: Wolf Meat for Wista reward is a Pouch which you will fill up on rather quickly. Making a hotkey can help get the bag off your cursor faster to continue your turn-ins.
    • WARNING! - This feature will also Drop Items on the Ground if you are completely full!
  • Example: Ctrl Click to Pickup Batwing > Hotkey for Use centerscreen to hand items to your npc > *You click Give* > Hotkey for Hoatbar with macro /autoinventory (to it get off cursor) > Ctrl Click next Batwing. Repeat!
  • Multi-Keybinds and Hotbars - Special note on Options and the key binding for Hotbars. There is a 'Keypress' and an 'Alternate' this means you can double map the same key. Also you can call 2 commands with 1 Key. common example is for monks combing Flying Kick with Epic click in one keypress. Example: Drag Flying Kick to Hotbar slot 1, Drag Epic slot onto the Hotbar 2. Then, from the options Define Hotbar 2 as Alternate = 1
    • Another example is say binding Sense Heading, Tracking or Forage onto the same key as Turn Left or Turn Right. This makes it much easier to train the skill just by moving around.

  • BAGS - Any Tradeskill container or Quest container can be used normally as a bag. Just ignore the Combine button.
    • 10 Slot Containers ( Bags ) Large and Giant can be purchased from vendors Elemental Grimoire and similar INT Caster Spell Research 'Tome' the name varies by town but is a 10 slot container , or for a GIANT size option Deluxe Toolbox from Iceclad from merchants that anyone can buy from. They are heavy but I usually prefer to have extra slots when carrying quest materials.
    • There are some 10 Slot containers for quest such as Gretta Mottle for a Muffin Crate which are very heavy but at 10 slots can be used in your bank without that penalty and are free to obtain.
    • Likewise, if you really prefer to reduce weight such as a monk you can opt for Medicine Bag at 0.4 wt , Large and x8 Slot also purchaseable from vendors.
    • There are plenty of nice droppable/tradeable weight reduction bags if you can afford them great, but my callout is for the cheapest/easiest to obtain from vendors.
  • LORE ITEM REWARDS - Lore Item quest rewards do not have to be deleted if doing multiple turn ins. In other words, you can still turn in faction quests repeatedly even if you cant hold another of the Lore reward item, it will just give you a dupe message. However, this mechanic seems to prevent turning in x4 of an item
  • TRADEABLE QUEST ITEMS - Cheap quest items like Muffins, Batwings, Bonechips, Fire Beetle Eyes, Snake Fangs, Wooden Chips, Bottles of Milk and Alcohol etc. could potentially be bought and sold with a different character, or hired Porter if you are KOS to nearby merchants. Then sell them directly to you OR onto a merchant you are able to use nearby your quest NPC. You could theoretically sell thousands onto a close merchant just to work around having to make multiple trips to a source that has infinite supply. (Eample Batwings in Felwithe, and Wooden Chips in Toxxulia, Bonechips anywhere and any Non-stackable item)
    • This can also help gather a large quantity of items that are not stackables (like Fire Beetle Eyes or Orc Pawn Picks) Because with max inventory slots 10x8 = 80 items is the max you could carry. Whereas, a merchant could hold hundreds or thousands. Better Example - Kiola Nut for Tumpy Tonics a porter could bind at the only vendor that sells these (In Oot) then port to town, sell them all to a merchant near you. Gate back, buy more. Repeat.
    • Remember- Find a merchant that has enough slots open to sell back. You can easily test this by selling 1 of something the vendor does not already carry in infinite supply. Anything cheap like food/water and see if it appears in their inventory for buyback. Use at your own risk. Because on a server reset (or npc death) you will loose everything
  • NO DROP QUEST ITEMS - Some no drop quest items are only obtained by killing an NPC that could cause more unwanted faction hits. You can avoid this by being FD when it dies if you are MNK, NEC or SK or have someone else kill it for you. You could get it really low HP, zone out and ask someone to finish it for you. offer that they get free exp (if any) and can have the rest of the loot, coin or fine steel. If all you need is a no drop quest item
OR If you have an alternate char that you dont care about the faction, you could kill with one char and then log and swap to your Faction character to the loot the no drop item.
    • Some quests might be MultiQuestable with No Drop items, but as this involves another person to help and often Lore items you it seems like more effort than its worth. In most cases MQ makes more sense when the reward is valuable gear and not faction.
      • There still might be some exceptions to this. Drolvarg Teeth is an example where they are stackable (not Lore), MQable yet also No Drop. If you know of any bards who swarm in FV then ask them to loot these. Then if you loot some of your own teeth, the bard MQ 3 and you can turn in the 4th to raise FV factions and gives a generous amount of exp even at level 40+
  • VENDOR FARMING - Always be on the lookout for quest items people sold onto merchants in common areas and noobie grounds. You can sort the columns of merchant inventory by Qty to see what isn't in infinite supply, or by Price, or just Alphabetical to quickly see those BoneChips. Example -Orc Pawn Pick are very cheap to buy back and used for several faction quests. Very easy to find these sitting on merchants in Freeport and East/West Commonlands. You might also find Deathfist Slashed Belt or Crushbone version in Gfay area.
    • Advanced Farming Methods- To clarify, a merchant has a limit to the number of inventory items they will display- but actually are still holding all of the items that were sold to it since respawn/server reset. If you are wealthy enough and don't mind spending some extra PP, you can fish through a vendor by removing items to see what else is there. For example, I would only recommend this in a low level zone where I am confident I will find what I am looking for. Generally things like Bonechips, Deathfist/Crushbone Belts, Fire Beetle Eyes, Snake scales/fangs, Wolf Meat and cheap stuff that drops in the area that new players would be selling often.
      • Sort the vendor by price cheapest first and Buy anything that has a Qty. (Remember Shift+Click to buy stacks) Then Close the merchant session and reopen it and the list should update. There is often a lot of junk in the copper/silver/gold range you could clear alot of it with only like 10p. Especially since you can go find another vendor to sell the junk back. Some items give a much better ratio for selling back and possible you might not even loose that much. But be warned, this is also a crapshoot. There is no way of knowing or seeing how many items are there. Could be hundreds and you could spend money and eventually find nothing. Its a risk but also can have a nice payout sometimes. I have found stacks of Bonechips in zones like Steamfont, 20, 40, 65 and quickly filled a bag for very little money.

If anything I found myself doing this as a sort of filler when I was bored inbetween quests and waiting on respawns or traveling to a new area.

  • BONE CHIPS - The Bone Chips Quests are very useful for raising and repairing many factions and will continue to be useful for a long time.
I suggest always buying up any you find on vendors and also /auc WTB BoneChips wherever you go.
    • The going rate has been 10p per stack for a long time. In my opinion, this is more than worth the potential factions you could get from 5(x4) or 20 turn ins.
(Plus, you may be buying from a brand new player and it could be facilitating an important age old economic transaction that is very helpful for new players to get spells and supplies. 10p for them is huge in the low levels. You could be making their day! )
    • Kurn's Tower Is reported to be the best location to farm bonechips because they often drop 2 - 3 at a time, but also seems to be popular hotspot for that same reason as well as for powerleveling. So the trick is trying to finding it unoccupied. As a backup, I suggest Steamfont Mountains or Butcherblock Mountains theres a lot of skellies and not as popular zones.
  • MULTI-STEP QUESTS - Some multi-step quests have sections that are repeatable. Since we are doing this for faction and not the end result armor/weapon - It is usually faster just to repeat one step of the quest rather than completing the whole thing. So when looking at applicable quests ( like Trueshot Longbow ) even if they look really long and complicated read them through anyways to see if there is a good repeatable step. Some quests might give a larger boost for the final turn in, but I still found those not to be worth the time required to complete them. If there is any quick, easy repeatable step then that is often the fastest way.
  • STRATEGY - Plan your strategy carefully, since many quests have Overlapping factions.
    • Start with the hardest slowest factions first. Because you should learn the pain of repairing them...But really depends on which class and race you started with.
    • Plan ahead for types of quest you want to do as they may require different thresholds to work like dubious - amiable. Be mindful of not lowering one too far so that you can still turn in quests to repair them.
    • Aim for crucial guild factions. Dont start with maxing easy ones like Guards because its easy to get from other many sources.
    • Overlapping factions - Many quests overlap faction rewards. I recommend anything rapidly repeatable such as well known Muffin for Pandos However, if you can afford buying many Small Lanterns instead I suggest a repeatable step of Trueshot Longbow, in which you get the same Factions but also a potential reward of Wooden Shards that can be helpful for maxing 3 different Erudin factions.
    • My personal strategy involved starting with Good/Neutral factions first that I already had progress on and Maxing them to Ally. I did this because eventually I assume I will have to take hits on these in order to fix the Evil ones. Id rather have them as high possible when that time comes.
  • OPPOSING FACTIONS - The order you work on each faction is important when raising two Opposing Evil and Good as most of the towns have Opposing Factions. Start with maxing the harder/slower ones while you can still hand in quests, and repair the easier/faster ones. You should not just try to get every faction everywhere all at once.
    • Example Dont buy up all faction items and and turn them in, and then go do another quest which lowers these again. In some cases you may have to do this to fully raise a faction but at least be intentional about when to do it.
    • In some cases it may be faster to kill and bottom out one faction to raise/cap another. Then switch to some rapid Muffin/Bonechip turn in style quests to repair the other.
  • FACTION ADJUSTMENT VALUES - Some of our wiki pages have been documented with actual faction values adjusted. If they are not listed, check AllakaZAM site for reference. It is possible the values are still the same but also could be different p99, so I strongly recommend testing it out before repeating a turn in.
In most cases these type of sources award similar ratios:
    • Killing trash creatures(Goblins, Orcs, Gnolls, Kobolds etc) usually just give +/- 1. But Some Named creatures may give more
    • Killing NPCs, Guards, Merchants, Town Citizens (Playable Race NPCs) usually give large Faction Negatives, and Moderate Faction Boosts. Example Negative 30 Positive 10
    • Quests - This is kind of a Mixed Bag. But some Quests only give 1 per (think Muffins) but other quests may give 10 or more. (think combined x8 Material into a Quest Box turn in)
      • Super Exceptions to this - Look carefully wherever listed, some quests and NPCs give radical amounts of boost. I discovered an Evil Messenger Quest Gharin's Note (evil) that after testing I am fairly certain the values for Bloodsaber was a +50 boost. Just for the 2nd step of Handing a Letter to an NPC. (The drawback there was farming the real Crow's Special Brew)
  • BALANCE - If you intend to raise ALL factions you will have to play a balancing game of raising one faction and lowering another and then repairing and 'Rinsing'. Thats why its important to find the right combination of quests/kills with more than +/-1 adjustments negative and positive to even out as best you can. I will work on documenting recommendations for this further into the guide.
    • SO Look carefully at each hit for better or worse! and PLEASE Update the wiki with the adjustment value only if you are confident it was more than 1
  • RINSING & CHAINS OF QUESTS - At first glance some quests may look like a bad idea because they lower other factions you will be working on. Example Rat Ear Pie Quest
But as long as there are other quests to fix and repair that faction that gets lowered, it shouldnt matter.
    • Example - The Arcane Scientists has limited sources and Rat Ear quest raises it quickly and easily but also lowers Opal Dark Briar . However, Opal Dark Briar can also be rapidly obtained from evil Bonechip quest in FP. And the Negative hits from that quest are easily rinsed out just by killing Orcs or other quests that have Positive hits only like Tonics for Groflah
This is why I want to categorize factions so you can easily tell if one is 'Safe' to lower
  • Example: Kill Halfings in Nektulos for quest items that raise Dark Elves and Neriak factions. Then Rinse this faction with Paladin Message > Assist the Great Xelha > Bandages for Honeybugger > Gnoll Fangs , > Moonstones > Tonics for Groflah and/or finally just Killing Gnolls, Goblins, Orcs and Bandits.

  • PAINEEL & ERUDIN - With the release of The Warrens, it became desirable work on Heretics faction for gaining access to Paineel, and Key to The Hole. But if you intend to work on raising any Erudin factions, many of those quests will be lowering Heretics. So I strongly recommend working on raising all Erudin factions first and raising them as high as you want to take them. THEN move onto Heretics and farm some 9000 Kobolds.
    • Paineel is an odd exception, because the entire 'Evil' town only has one Faction - Heretics. After struggling to find any quick quests to raise Erudin crucial guild factions, I eventually realized it would just be faster to kill Paineel citizens which for some reason boost all 3 of the hard to obtain Erudin guild and class specific factions. Killing NPCs was incredibly faster than turn-in quests like the (UNSTACKABLE) Molars and Combining Necklaces I had been attempting (Truly Awful). There is no fear of lowering Heretics from killing Paineel citizens, as they are a 'Safe' faction to rinse out infinitely repairable by just by killing Kobolds.
  • OPTIMIZING AND EFFICIENCY - As you start to consider the larger picture of improving each faction, try to optimize your time by working towards obtaining multiple quests or materials at the same time.
    • Some messenger quests begin in the same towns, and deliver to similar locations. Pickup several if you are making the trip across zones anyways. (see Note for Rebby , Note for Janam and Lenka's Pouch )
    • Make hotkeys for quests. Some of which you can do near/around an NPC through walls, floors, ceilings to save you even more time
      • Example:
/target Nestral
/pause 1
/say I can run to Janam and Rebbys

    • When traveling to and from places, keep an eye out for easy Quest materials like Bone Chips and Belts, Gnoll Fangs, etc. Make a small detour to clear that goblin/orc camp. See a skeleton in your path? Bop it.. Even if you just obtain a few extra materials on your way to and from town. The materials will start to add up. Be firing on all cylinders. Also I think this helps break up the tedious messenger quests and repeated behavior and makes for more enjoyable/interesting gameplay.
  • TRADESKILLS - Consider taking up some tradeskills. For two reasons. Baking can be used for crafting some quest turn ins like Pickled Frogloks. The second reason is it can be a good way to fill downtime if you are bored waiting for a respawn.
    • Example - for Baking you can 'buy' your way to 135 Skill with all vendor sold materials. Batwing Crunchies and Fish Fillets and Fish Rolls in that order.
    • Find a recipe for a tradeskill that has a crafting container you can carry. Fletching Kit, Spit, Sewing Kit, Potion Bag etc. (Anything that you can carry the crafting container) That way you can continue to work on the skills while still holding a camp. Or you can use the downtime waiting for a respawn to head back to town , refill on crafting materials and/or do the crafting there.
  • CORPSE LOOTING TIPS - Have you ever killed your mob and been unable to locate the corpse? Seemed like it poofed? Chances are it just got stuck underneath/outside the map. Try using the /target command to locate it. and /Loot to loot it. This should work depending on proximity and not Line of Sight.
    • The general syntax in EQ command line can work as a 'match' or closest to. Example - '/target a' would attempt to target any nearby creature or corpse that starts with 'a' like 'a goblin' or 'a goblin's corpse'

If that didnt work and you want to target the exact name, use Underscores __ as spaces in the name. Example /target a_goblin_alchemist

    • If you are still unable to loot the corpse even after targeting it.(You are too far away to loot that corpse!) But you are certain you are close enough and could not get any closer. Immediately /camp and log back in. Sometimes Corpse position is bugged from your client's perspective. Relogging should refresh the correct position of the corpse according to the server.
Seems to happen more often with large corpses like Giants.

Factions Categories

Instead of using towns, races, classes or starting alliances--Define each faction into categories related to difficulty and risk.

  • One Way Ticket = Factions that have 0 known source for raising it on P99 - OR the only source to raise it requires a minimum threshold. Once they are lowered, they can never be raised again.
Examples include - Geonids, Sporali, Burynai, Brownie, Tunare, etc. Like Plane of Growth is to Tunarian followers. These are not really relevant to this guide, but more a reminder if you are running around killing every creature that there are some out there that can be ruined. You have been warned!
  • Enemy Creature Factions = There are some creature factions that if you tried hard enough you could become non KOS. Goblins, Orcs, Gnolls, Frogloks, Bixies etc. Very limited ways to do this, and even as a completionist, I do not see a huge desire for doing this except as a serious Role Player. If one wanted to only be max Ally with all creature factions I think this would mean ruining many town factions in the process and I would consider it a different goal than this guide all together. But mentioning it for reference..
  • At Risk (or Extremely Time Consuming) = There are very few quests or methods to raise them. If you became KOS it could be very difficult to raise it again. (Needing illusion, or invis to turn ins )
Examples - No creatures types gives this (no orcs, goblins, gnolls etc) , only other Guard/NPCs which have opposing factions
OR they are over-all time consuming (like Lore Item No Drop messenger quest across continents)
    • Basically most of the evil factions are like this. Challenging if you aren't already born into being liked by them.
  • Safe - Slow = There are sources to eventually rinse these factions safely, however it takes much longer. There are No trash creatures to farm, and no rapid repeat quests. They may involve messenger quests, Lore items or minimum faction thresholds for a majority of quests. OR other sources are too damaging to other factions. Technically safe, but takes a long time to repair
    • Basically any of the good/neutral town factions that do not have a rapid kill/quest repeat source.
    • Example Freeport Militia - I hate this faction. On paper it looks not so bad, but apparently theres many ways to lower it and only slow ways to raise it. Even with a relatively short double messenger Janam/Rebby quest or Inert Potion. I did them so many times but too many other sources lower it again. Technically safe, but takes a long time to repair. almost belongs in 'At Risk' category.
  • Safe - Easy = Many quests and methods to farm. A Faction you could never permanently ruin. Infinitely repairable and rinseable. Killing trash, and repeatable rapid quests.
    • Example Qeynos - Killing Gnolls is + to Qeynos town factions ( AND Merchants!) and only -negative to Gnoll. You could become completely bottomed out in KOS, and unable to talk to or vendor anywhere near Qeynos. But simply spending enough time killing gnolls and clearing Blackburrow you could eventually raise them all again.
    • Another Example is Kaladim. Killing dwarves would ruin all of the Town Faction, and killing Orcs/Goblins only Repairs some guards but not all the guilds and merchants. However, the legendary Canloe Nusback is on one the main factions raised by killing orcs. Thus, you can grind creatures to reach his threshold to turn into him Belts + Pads. Those quest give faction for the allowing to max all of them. There are also Bandits in Butcherblock which help repair the rest of them. The same is true to a lesser extent in some other towns too, like Rivervale, Goblins and Bandages quest

The Balance Game

Now comes the hard part. If you really want to raise all Evil + Good factions it will involve raising one and lowering another. Then going back and raising the one that was lowered through other means.
Remember - killing NPCs usually does a large negative and smaller boost so they are going to be a bad source if the opposing faction is not in a 'Safe' repairable category. Quests are more likely to give the best Ratio. So ideally you find a quest that has No Negative town faction hits. Example - No matter how much you lower Freeport Militia if you repaired it with Inert Potion or Note for Rebby you could always 'Rinse' away the negative. It just might take a really long time.
However, you could still use a source that has negative hits as long as those are repairable too. Example - raise Arcane Scientists w/ Rat Ear Pie > Assist the Great Xelha to fix Opal Dark Briar & Dismal Rage > Tonics for Groflah to repair Knights of Truth

  • Here is where faction adjustment values become very important. Some factions like Gnomes/Dark Elves have so few options for quests that they all oppose eachother. Every source I could find will raise one and lower another. So you must look closely for a Quest/Kill that does higher positive and less negative.
  • General plan if Ally for Good and KOS to Evil like in my Example The Dead and Eldritch Collective,
    • First - Assuming you are unable to Illusion - kill sources that balance it out until you are no longer KOS. Killing is usually a bad source with a large negative, so only do it as long as you need to reach a Quest threshold.
    • Get standing high enough (amiable?) to start quests for The Dead.
    • Switch to a quest with a good ratio such as +10 to the Dead, and -1 to Eldritch. Raise as high as desired.
    • Then work on repairing Eldritch to minimum quest threshold (apprehensive?)
    • Then use a quest with the opposite ratio such as +10 to the Eldritch, and -1 to The Dead. Raise as high as desired
    • RINSE REPEAT
  • The Balance could require 2 or more quests to eventually even out to a faction which is repairable like in the Rat Ear Pie example above.
  • There are some workarounds when obtaining quest items that only drop from killing an NPC.
    • Example - People often kill guards in Freeport who drop Damaged Militia Helm and they rot because they are no drop quest item. You can simply loot these and turn them in Corrupt Guards (Cleric version) if you wanted to work on Freeport Clerics.
In fact I find that most people ignore No Drop Quest items because they have no idea what they are for. If they are rotting anyways, might as well Loot them all and look the quest up later. You might be suprised to find that things like Orc Runner Pouch are still useful for a faction hit and not something you can farm easily.

Best Faction Quests

My own personal favorite list for some very useful faction turn ins. Not gonna lie, some of these are absolutely tedious to repeat several thousand times over. If you have ever done a Muffin Turn in many times you know what I mean. However, These still seem to be wayyy faster and prefrable than limited alternatives that involve Messenger Quests, LORE items, and having to travel across continents.
Tumpy Tonics +Dwarves/Kaladim
Honey Mead for Trumpy + Evil Qeynos Rogues/Guards
Rat Ear Pie Quest + Arcane Scientists
Muffin Quests Various
Bone Chips Quests Various
Gharin's Note (evil) +50 Bloodsabers
Guard Shilster's Stout +Bloodsabers
Inert Potion +Rogues/Corrupt Guards
Orc Scalp Collecting
Gnoll Bounty + most Halas factions
Moonstones Qeynos factions 2 different steps with different boosts both useful
Left Goblin Ears All positive - Highpass people/Corrupt people
Plaguebringer Proof This quest sucks just repeat the beginning steps
Red Wine enable Easy passage through Neriak! - Guards, Inner, Outer + Bargainers (Merchants)
Paladin Message

The Race LIST

Troll - Grobb

Category - At Risk / Time Consuming
How do I break in?
Grobb is an outdoor zone allowing Wolform. Request the services of a Druid to cast Group Wolf Form on you immediately putting you at apprehensive so you can start some quests.
OR

Troll Warriors + Troll Guards (Bashers) + Troll Shadowknights

DaBashers
Shadowknights of Night Keep
Kill Bugglegupp and/or Lynuga
After these are high enough, you may switch to or include handing Fire Beetle Eyes for A Job for Nanrum (This quest kinda sucks because Fire Beetle Eyes not stackable and you need x3 per handin but could be vendor farmed/ moved and resold)
Once SKs are high enough (Amiably+), you may switch to or include handing in Bone Chips to Hukulk for Bone Chips Grobb but keep in mind this also Lowers Ogre Warriors which you will need to repair later

Troll Shamans

Dark Ones
This one can be dangerous. If you are Invis or Sneaked (if you con Indifferent) you may hand in to Kaglari (hide around the corner from her) some Deathfist Slashed Belts for More Help for Innoruuk And you may hand in for Majik Power 2 Bone Chips and 2 Snake Scales which are sold in Infinite Supply from a few places such as in EC from Pardor the Blessed.

Troll Merchants

Grobb Merchants
Farm Wolf Meat to repeat Wolf Meat for Wista. This quest is a great candidate for 'vendor farming' where is is highly likely to find Wolf Meat sold to many vendors in newbie zones and very cheap to buyback all of it (such as Misty Thicket).

Ogre - Oggok

Category - At Risk / Time Consuming
How do I break in?
Oggok is an outdoor zone allowing Wolform. Request the services of a Druid to cast Group Wolf Form on you immediately putting you at apprehensive so you can start some quests.

Ogre Warriors - Ogre Shadowknights - Ogre Guards (Bouncers) - Some Ogre Merchants

Clurg
Craknek Warriors
Green Blood Knights
Oggok Guards
Farm Froglok Meat from Guk or anywhere and use minor baking skill to make Pickled Froglok and hand in 3 +10 Gold to Chef Dooga - the negative hit to Kazon Stormhammer can be rinsed with Bone Chips Kaladim which has no negative hits

Ogre Shamans

Shamen of War
This is another dangerous one with very limited methods to raise out of KOS. Illusion will not work. Sneak might be required.
I found 1 messenger type quest with 2 steps that are possible to hand in with Invis/Sneak even while KOS - Marda's Secret Mission
However, it is so dangerous because Marda is a GuildMaster in a room near several other GMs. They are lvl 61+ and hit for 200 - 300s. Even if you have FeignDeath still isnt a guarantee you can survive if make a mistake and get aggro.
Follow these steps for the safest method I found.

  • Bring minimum 3 Cloudy Potions or Invis Charges
  • Invis up and head into the Shaman area, into the room and stand directly behind Marda. This should block you from view from the other GM across the room.
  • Sneak if you can
  • Hand the item to Marda (open trade window)
  • Click another invis charge to get back to Indiffierent
  • Turn in Quest
  • Invis back up if needed, and escape
  • Rinse, Repeat

Dark Elves - Neriak

Category - At Risk / VERY Time Consuming
How do I break in?
If you do not care about Halfling Rivervale faction, the fastest and easiest way is to kill Leatherfoot haflings in Nektulos.

Dark Elf Guards + Dark Elves Merchants

Dreadguard Inner
Dreadguard Inner
Dark Bargainers
This is one of the few times I recommend to acquire a self illusion. I suggest purchasing 1 or your farming your own Ball of Golem Clay. The reason is, it can be used indoors (in Neriak) and will put you above the threshold for this quest Bottle of Red Wine that is easier and relatively cheap to go from KOS to Ally. Go to any Bar elsewhere and buy as many stacks as you can afford and carry of Red Wine, then use your illusion and hand them all in for Boosts to both Dark Elf guard factions and Merchants. There is even a Bar in the same zone so you can buy more there. If you cannot find or afford the illusion item, then you can still opt to Kill leatherfoots and repair Halflings later (but takes a long time)

Dark Elf Rogues

Hall of the Ebon Mask
The best method I found is Moss Snakes quest. You can hide around the corner from the npc Hekzin G`Zule and turn in while indifferent sneaked or invis. Snake Scales can be bought in infinite supply from a few vendors like one in EC nearby Pardor the Blessed
Snake Fang can be farmed from any snakes. The higher level the snakes seem to be worse because their loot pool is increased to include Giant Snake Fangs and other things. So lvl 1 snakes in noobie grounds might be faster than giant snakes. but medium lvl like Rattlesnakes in commonlands were decent because they could drop 2 fangs but not Giant ones.
The best spot I found was in South Ro in the grassy area near the Druid Rings, there are just a lot of snakes of all types all over the place.

Dark Elf Clerics

Priests of Innoruuk
Even while KOS you can trigger the quest Innoruuk Recommendation then using more Sneak/Invis around a corner to turn it in to Perrir Zexus.
The negative hits can be rinsed out later with Paladin Message , Bone Chips Qeynos and Bonechips Freeport Assist the Great Xelha
The negative hits to Freeport Militia can be rinsed by killing orcs and any/either of Note for Janam , Note for Rebby, or Inert Potion

  • Repair Freeport Militia using Inert Potion quest in Erudin has a trick to repeat it faster. The quest item giver is on the upper floor Toresian Fhabel and the turn is 2 floors down on the bottom Slansin Denvin. But you can actually trigger Toersian from the bottom floor to get the potion with hotkeys if you stand in the right spot (because Z-axis in EQ is special) - to find the spot on the bottom floor go into the Erudin City Office room, on the right hand wall is a bench and stand at or around /LOC +705, +801 and then use the hotkey.
    • Setup a social hotkey like so:
/target Toresian_Fhabel
/say I wish to assist Toresian
    • Then simply leave the City Hall and straight across this hall into Vials of Vitality is where Slansin is to turn in. If you don't see Slansin up, you may have to trigger him with the other part of Toresian's quest text 'I will study enchantment' but once the correct version is spawned you do not need to repeat this step ( on npc death or server reset?). Bonus is for some reason Erudin palace is an outdoor zone so you can even cast sow/jboots to make this trip across the hall even faster.
Some Dark Elf Casters

The Spurned
There is a messenger quest that can be handed in to Draxiz N`Ryt while Sneaked out of sight Innoruuk Symbol Quests - I was able to skip to step go to Wallin Slyfoot in WC and say 'assist' to get the letter. A bit confusing to me, part of the Innoruuk quest involves getting an 1 charge illusion in order to deceive Wallin into intercepting the letter. But if your faction is already good with (Deeppockets?) you can skip to this step
Alternatively, kill Master Whoopal and you can turn in his head with the same method. This is one of the cases where I suggest killing with a separate character to avoid the negative faction and then loot his Head with your main.

Dark Elf Necromancers and Dark Elf Shadowknights

The Dead
The fastest method I found is to Kill Dragoon Szorn who is kind of a nasty undercon on 1hr respawn but avoids ruining some other hard to repair opposing factions. It will lower Indigo Brotherhood so raise The Dead as high as you want to before moving onto Repair Indigo Borhterhood (in the next section below)

Dark Elf Warriors

Maybe the most hated faction in the game. The Dark Elves even hate each other
Indigo Brotherhood
Remember - this is the faction shared by Crushbone Orcs. Once you start repairing this, you should no longer attack any Crushbone Orcs all across the continent of Faydwer.
This is one of the few times killing opposing npcs appears to be the only method. I could not find any quest or illusion or sneaky tricks to turn in if you are KOS.
In Lesser Faydark find some huts with Wood Elves in them. Ironically very close to their enemies Tier Dal camp and Dragoon Szorn..
Kill these 9 woodelf NPCS

The last one Glyndur is actually outside the village a little ways North next to the closest Path

  • Glyndur Tindel
    • Bonus - Inbetween respawns you could also hitup a Bandit camp thats not far NW up the path from Glyndur for an extra +4 Human factions and up to two bronze daggers each for a little bit of extra pp at the same time. Also, in Lfay I found it possible to trigger lot of other named to spawn from killing any/all roaming enemies. There is a Named Wasp, Spider, Fairy, Pixie, Brownies(x3) , Unicorn but most notably a Fae Drake Old Dimshimmer can drop non lore Illusion Tree clicky that if you get 2 you can recharge yourself for very cheap.

Repair Emerald Warriors by killing aqua goblins in Butcher Block
The other two lowered are Merchants of Felwithe and Kelethin Merchants which are both kind of At Risk/Time Consuming but you could repair with Fresh Baked Muffins for Kelethin or Shark Meat or Orc Vest for Felwithe which is slower but has zero negative hits. However, being merchants the lowest they can ever con to you is Dubious, even if you are technically KOS. With the exception of the Bankers who appear to be on Merchant faction, but not actually a merchant. This can cause an issue even if you are Allied with guards, if you aggro the banker then they can still social aggro the Guards on to you.

Once you are Amiably+ with Indigo you have several options Orc Pawn Picks or Yegek's Test, Part 1 but the best one is probably Innoruuk Symbol Quests collect the non-clicky version of Leatherfoot Raider Skullcap from Halflings in Nektulos forest and hand in x4. These quest are still the worst kind of quests because they involve non stackable items Fire Beetle Eyes and Orc Pawn Picks, and Caps but could also be vendor farmed and normal farmed all across nektulos, and EC to FP. After killing 2500 wood elves, this was a welcome change of scenery
Repair and rinse the Halfling Faction with Bandages for Honeybugger and then Storm Guard repair by killing green goblins. At first I thought RunnyEye Citadel would be the best, but the respawn timer because its a dungeon is pretty high at 22 mins, and the entire bottom floor (Pickclaws) do not actually give Storm Reapers. In Misty Thicket there are only a few goblin camps and not any roamers (besides Mooto). Unless you are interested in farming Blackened Iron/Alloy armor and weapons, I would suggest Butcher Block instead of Misty/Runnyeye. In ButcherBlock the Goblin Whelps are plentiful in the newbie ground by the entrance to Kaladim. With their respawn being 1 minute and the rest the zone being 6mins made it much faster than Runnyeye.

    • Bonus - You can do a loop from Kaladim, to Docks and around to hit Aqua Goblins, Bandits (for Dwarf ROG) and back to ent for green goblins to be hitting 10 factions at once, as well as hitting all skeletons for bonechips

Iksar - Cabilis

Category - Safe / Slow
How do I break in?

Iksar Warriors and some Iksar Guards ( Troopers )

Legion of Cabilis
Killing any goblins, sarnaks, bandits all across Kurnark. There are many sources and places but I recommend Warsliks Woods and the Goblin Fort there, for a high volume of mob density in small area, but more importantly can farm Grachnist the Destroyer for the clicky Shrunken Goblin Skull Earring at the same time, which are actually not Lore so you could collect several.
They are valuable to sell but also nice to keep 1 each for ANY/ALL class/character as a GlobalCoolDown reset and instant junk buff vs dispelling dragons and such.

Once the Troopers are above KOS..

Iksar Shamans - Iksar Monks - Iksar Residents (Merchants) - Iksar Shadowknights (Cruasaders)

Cabilis Residents
Scaled Mystics
Crusaders Of Greenmist
Swift Tails
Turn in many many Bonechips for Bone Chips Field of Bone This took me a very long time but have confirmed possible. Expect it to require over 20,000 Bonechips..
Tips - Saving grace is that Kurn's Tower is pretty close to where you turn in. It will be the best spot to farm bonechips. Also /auc WTB them.
Also clear all skeletons in Field of Bone on the way to and from Kurns.
The danger - Troopers may be allied, but Crusaders will still be KOS. The Crusader guards also path along the same route as the Troopers at the FOB to Cabilis zone. You have a period of a few minutes inbetween their roaming cycles. So if you keep a close lookout you can move in to Trooper Mozo and do turn ins, and run away as Crusaders pass by (or FD).

Iksar Necromancers

Brood of Kotiz

If not KOS, can say to an Iksar hermit in West Cab "I am a great sorcerer" and get free Brood faction. you can simply repeat this message with 0 cooldown until max ally..

If KOS a monk can Invis behind him, Sneak and still trigger text to gain faction but will gain aggro
You can create a macro to trigger the quest text, and immediately Feign Death before you get hit (if it doesnt fail!)

/stand
/pause 1
/say I am a great sorcerer
/doability X (Feign Death)

Once you are not KOS you can simply repeat this message with 0 cooldown until max ally

OR
Kill The Forsaken iksars (bandits/brigands) who roam Kurnark. The best location is a cave off the NW coastal beach of Field of Bone, it has 12 spawns in a small area on 6:40 respawn. Another option is a few sets of ruins in Warsliks Woods and could be multi-tasked with goblins. They are also roaming all over Field of Bone

Dwarves - Kaladim

Category - Safe / Easy

Dwarf Warriors - Dwarf Paladins - Dwarf Clerics - Dwarf Merchants

Storm Guard
Kazon Stormhammer
Miners Guild 249
Merchants of Kaladim
Bone Chips Kaladim
If you don't care about ruining Indigo Brotherhood, or Ogre Warriors then clear Crushbone and farm belts. If you dont want to ruin Indigo Brotherhood, you could still Buy CB Belts from vendors, other players or farm them with another character. Otherwise: Kill green goblins, and dwarven bandits in Butcherblock
If you don't care about ruining Ogre Warriors, you can supplement with additional newbie quests in Kaladim, such as Giant Rat Pelts for Jeet to help raise Rogues faster.

Dwarf Rogues

Miners Guild 628 Kill Bandits in Butcherblock. If you dont care about ruining DE Rogues or Qeynos Rogues, theres a couple easy quests like you can mass hand in Rat Patrol which are pretty easy to Vendor farm

Erudite - Erudin & Paineel

If you plan to raise both Erudin and Paineel the order you do them is relevant. Start with raising Erudin as high as desired and then repair Heretics for Paineel.
Killing Paineel citizens is the fastest method I found to raise most Erudin factions. First, you must be able to access the elevator to get into Paineel. This requires Amiable faction to get your own key. But you could 'tailgate' in with someone else opening it.
There is a trick to get yourself in (but not out) by creating a new character. First Park your main right outside Paineel elevator. Then make a new evil erudite necro. Get your key. Exit the Town and sit close to the elevator. /camp and hold the key out and click the elevator when you have 5 seconds left before camp. Then switch back to your Main. The elevator should now be at the top. Hop on and it automatically goes back down into the town.
OR - Kill Kobolds in Warrens until Amiable with Heretic to get your own Key. This can still take a long time if you are start with scowling to Heretics. I cleared the entire Warrens zone about 10 times to get to Amiable. Once you get your key, KEEP IT. Buy a Hole key if you want it too. Then it doesnt matter how low you bring Heretics again until you are ready to repair it.

Erudite Enchanters - Erudite Mages - Erudite Wizards - Erudite Guards
Erudite Citizens

Erudite Citizen There are only a few NPCs on this faction. There is a repeatable quest step to easily raise this, with the catch that you have to buy Innoruk's Kiss of Death and can only hold one (LORE) so you have to make 1 trip at a time. Though the distance is very close in the same zone one building over. Buy from Geoard BlueHawk and deliver to Sinnkin Highbrow. Repeat.

Vah Shir - Luclin

Kejek Village Just kidding. These relatives of the feline race live in the Stonebrunt Mountains. They are not a playable race, but an exception to this guide as another 'Town' you can enter and vendor in, as well as quests with rewards that are useful.
There arent many quests but the two fastest are probably Miranda's Chocolate and Repeating Step #1 of Spirit Aid by farming mass amounts of Large Brick of High Quality Ore and to repeat the Soulforge Hammer turn in.

The Overthere - The Outpost

The Outpost is another odd exception to our list. It is a Town you can walk into, vendor, bank and do some quests..but is not governed by any playable race faction. Also, ALL of the merchants are Greedy (double prices / sell for 50% less ) It is an 'evil' faction of Venril Sathir. This means if you want to stay on or raise this faction means forfeiting camping in Karnor's Castle which has mobs on the same faction. Those two reasons alone make it questionable if it is worth it. However, Having a Bank to access near the OT HammerHill is very convenient though. If you do not have invis/FD otherwise is quite dangerous to attempt with dragoons pathing nearby.

This is potentially a One-Way ticket faction unless you Raid Kurnark Dragons. The only mobs you could kill to raise the faction are raid targets in Veeshan's Peak, or raid Dragons. Getting the VP key is not easy. Getting just a 'tag' on these dragons might be easier even if you are not part of the guild killing it. But I think the difficulty would be 'being there at the right time' considering these Window spawns 7 day plus or minus respawn timers.
The easiest way if you are still within quest threshold is Protect the Shipyard farming sarnak berzerker war braids. These are No Drop which sucks but not Lore.

Etiquette

If you are a high lvl and farming low lvl mobs for faction, please be courteous of other players trying to exp. All of my strategies for faction killing assumes the area is already unoccupied. If someone arrives and is clearly trying to just get exp, please relinquish the camp/spawn to them or come to an agreement if they are only after a certain drop. You could even mention your faction and ask to just tag each mob they are killing. Put yourself in their shoes and try to imagine being lvl 14 again, and making it to Blackburrow and find the entire zone is empty because a 60 is killing everything. Don't be "that" person"

Conclusion

This ordeal is tedious and will probably take a long time. I would compare this to attempting to a 100% completion in some other big games.
It will require a lot of time and dedication, and there may by little rewards to show except access to a handful of nifty quests , saftey, convenience, your own recognition and bragging rights. Though I found it interesting to know it is possible to do with every single faction regardless of race/class/diety. And I found it fun to try quests I had never done before and be a human completing Ogre/Troll quests.
Additionally, I will point out that my research from other EQ sites and forums indicates that not all Quests were discovered even on Live. There are some Quest Items that have no known use in the game, to this day. In BB Peg Leg's Small Wooden Leg is a good example. Another is Moggok's Right Eye.
There are some NPCs that have some dialogue which is unrelated to any known quest.
Confirmed That not all quest dialogue will provide you [Bracket] keywords. So there may be unknown combinations of words or phrases to trigger quests that are undocumented. And/Or they could require such a high faction of obscure alliance that no one has bothered or tried them.

There also seems to be an assumption that most oldworld quests require only amiable faction. That may be true for most, but I would like to believe there are some secret outliers that require Ally faction, and secret dialogue to trigger. Wouldn't you like to be the one to discover them, 20 years later?

A Dreamer can still Dream eh?
