GM Room
A GM Room is typically a small room which is unreachable to normal players used by GMs and guides to gain presence in a zone with their character without being concerned about unintentionally interfering with NPCs, the world, normal players, or other aspects of the player experience.
In the early days of classic EverQuest, GMs and especially guides used the same/similar clients as regular players with very few additional tools to administer policies or provide customer service. In other words, GMs and guides created and logged on characters just like normal players do, and what few tools they had were special / commands and special items with powerful clicky effects. Besides basic account information, GMs had no access to the server backend and could not directly make changes to character data themselves (apparently only developers had this access).
Since an in-game presence was required, and this presence could disrupt player experience, world developers added GM rooms to certain zones (especially dungeons where conflicts were more common). These rooms were often isolated far away from the rest of the zone and might have textures with silly images or useful /loc numbers for GMs to teleport to via commands. Some GM rooms are visible to gnomes or other small races who can clip their viewpoint through walls, and a few are reachable when players get feared or fall through the world for one reason or another.
Some GM rooms can be easily found and viewed on third party map viewers such as ([1]).
Here is a (probably not exhaustive) list of zones known to have GM rooms:
- Plane of Sky, the quest room was reportedly a GM room until repurposed, then the GMs claimed a high, unreachable island.
- Plane of Mischief, visible when clipping through some walls in the west part of the rat maze, see also LosCountAhAhAh
- Befallen, located behind the zone wall at the entrance, reachable by lowering FPS or when the player is feared with some luck.
- Nagafen's Lair, probably visible when clipping through some of the rooms above window room
- Solusek's Eye, probably visible when clipping through some of the rooms north of kobold predator
- The Hole, far above the city section
- Lower Guk, far above the live side king room
- Veeshan's Peak, approximately below the pillow room at loc (0, 0)
- Temple of Veeshan, below and a little north of Lord Vyemm's cubbyhole
