Targeting
From Project 1999 Wiki

Introduction
Targeting NPCs in classic EverQuest is more challenging than in live EverQuest, because some of the targeting mechanisms have been removed.
This includes the targeting ring, as well as "cycle targeting". On Project 1999 you must rely on the following mechanisms to target NPCs.
Allowed
-
Mouse Click
- Clicking on an NPC will target it -
/assist
(/ass
) - This command will switch your target from your currently selected target, to that player/NPC's target -
F1
(Target Self/Pet) - This keyboard mapping (which can be changed) will target, unless you have a pet and are currently targeting yourself, in which case it will target your pet instead -
F2
-F6
(Target Group Members/Pets) - This keyboard mapping (which can be changed) will target the indicated group member (eg. F2 will target the group member in the first slot of the party window, F3 will target the second, etc.), or their pet if you have them targeted when you press the key (if they have a pet) -
F7
(Target Nearest PC) - This keyboard mapping (which can be changed) will target the first player character in your view. -
F8
(Target Nearest NPC) - This keyboard mapping (which can be changed) will target the first NPC entity in your view. -
Tab
(Swap Target - This keyboard mapping (which can be changed) will swap between targeting yourself and your last non-self target.- It’s very useful to keep tabs on a tank not in your group on raids or to keep track of a charmed pet or an NPC during an escort part of a quest.
-
/target
(/tar
) *name* (Type Target) - allows you to Target an NPC or PC near you by typing out all or part of the name of the NPC.- Note from a Player: Previously you could target with NPC ID numbers to identify placeholders but I believe they nerfed that properly but you should still be able to
/target
Lord Nagafen
- Note from a Player: Previously you could target with NPC ID numbers to identify placeholders but I believe they nerfed that properly but you should still be able to
Prohibited
-
- this UI, which added a glowing "halo" around the currently targeted mob, used to work on Project 1999, but was removed as unclassic.Targeting ring
-
- this keyboard mapping option used to work on Project 1999, but has since been removed as unclassic. It allowed you to cycle between NPCs 1-10 and then start over at 1 again.Tab
(Cycle Target)- This makes many game functions like Crowd Control and DS powerleveling extremely trivial as you can seemlessly target every mob in a crowd one by one without getting the same target twice. It is good they remove this because with it in there is a lot of power gained by CC classes that they should not have by being able to quickly lock down a big train. You should need to fumble with your mouse or continually reposition yourself and try F8 to get a proper Target.
Classic/Non-Project 1999
In classic there was also the following option, but the Titanium client does not support it:
- Unmapped (Target Pet) - This keyboard mapping is unmapped by default, but can be bound to a key; if it is it will target your pet (only; not you)
