Notes on Cumulative Raster Spawn Probabilities

Probability that Raster spawns in 10 hour window is 1 minus the probability that Raster spawns exactly 0 times over 10 hours.

10 hours RL camp recommended by author. 10*60 = 600 minute recommended camp.

Assume 72 RL minute per EQ day.

600/72 = 8.3 EQ days over 10 RL hours

Assume 3 spawn opportunities per EQ day.

8.3*3 = 25 spawns in 10 RL hours.

Using binomial distribution to find probability Raster spawns ZERO times:

(n choose k)*p^(k)*q^(n-k) = (25 choose 0)*0.05^0*0.95*(25) = 0.28

1.0-0.28 = 72% chance for Raster to spawn at least one time.

Further Tips on camping Raster

Quick note on the spawn times listed above: they are correct, but only if you kill the 10am PH right when it spawns, and continue to kill PHs immediately as they spawn. For instance, if you arrive at the camp at 2pm and kill the 10am PH, you will not necessarily get a 7-8pm and 5am PH. The only firm spawn time is 10 am.

To the fellow monks who have the patience:

I started grouping at around level 38; Moderately twinked. After spending about 40+ hours camping Raster, I took extensive notes which I will condense here.

Off and on from 2 hours to 9 hours he never spawned. At one point I had 35+ place holders consecutively which was either a minotaur or a froglok. If you have trouble getting someone to help you out, come back at level 45 and you can hold the camp down without worrying too much; Or come back at level 50+ and turn this place upside down.

Raster of Guk is slightly stronger than the minotaurs that spawn here. I have heard of him as level 37, but I am convinced he is about level 39. He hits for max 80 damage and quad hits. When I finally encountered him, I was alone and he quad me once before I killed him. When he died, I was at 35% health with mend down.

Update: Parsed Raster on 11/17/2017 as having 1692 HP, which is slightly less than some of the higher level Minotaur's, with a max hit of 76 damage. Assuming Raster follows the standard max damage calculation that 99% of Old World/Kunark mobs follow (Mob Lvl X 4 - 60 = Level of Mob), the Raster spawn I killed was level 34. In my experience, Old World mobs will never hit for less damage than the Level x 4 - 60 = Mob Level Formula, only for more damage so it's extremely likely he was level 34. As a level 45 decently twinked monk he hit me for about 575 damage total over the course of the fight.

I was told of a neat trick where when he spawns, have sneak on and give him a minotaur horn so he won't quad hit you. When I did this, he did this once to me, so I'm not sure if this works but it couldn't hurt. (Update: Giving an NPC an instrument, in this case a Minotaur Horn, will NOT prevent them from quadding. Not only does it not prevent an NPC from quadding, it will force NPC's that regularly don't quad to start quadding. This is why Enchanter's give their charmed pet Torches.)

If you like solo'ing and don't want to depend on others, bring a minimum of 5 stacks of bandages. I have heard bring 8+ stacks but again, moderately twinked (fbss & weapons) it shouldn't be that much of a problem. I was told to pull to pit area but I kept on getting aggro so the best place would be near the fire pot and try to DPS as much as possible, backed into the corner. At level 45, you should be able to kill 1 minotaur with losing 20% health. If 2 start beating down on you, don't panic, just kill 1 asap and FD. Then repeat when you feel comfortable with taking down another.

His spawn rate has been estimated to be about 5%. Of course, he can spawn anywhere from 2 to 100+ hours, even back to back if you're lucky. I have crunched mathematical probabilities which I won't bore you here, but to maximize your encounter with him, try to prepare a 10 hour slot. It is definitely one of the boring camps to do, but I am sure that doing off and on couple hours here and there is considerably worse than doing a long session because the off times you don't get him, someone else will.

Again, your mileage may vary. But for me I am very unlucky so I always side with the worst possible scenario. Good luck.

Raster Spawn Probability

Cumulative probablities represented in this plot

Raster

Assuming 5% Raster spawn rate, and assuming 3 spawns per EQ day, and assuming:

12 hour RL camp session, there is a 78% probability that Raster will spawn at least once.

10 hour RL camp session, there is a 72% probability that Raster will spawn at least once.

5 hour RL camp session, there is a 49% probability that Raster will spawn at least once.

Calculation details in discussion page for anyone interested.

Note on difficulty for those wondering "can I do it or should I wait? 48 Iksar monk w/ fungi, rbg, and black panther filling in. Wu's Quivering Staff. Started this camp at 46, got two full levels at it before Raster spawned (2 days). 3rd day, happened to log in at 10AM game time and had to break the camp to get set up. So of course Raster popped a little after 7AM game time. Got him though, despite depop scare. Whew. He wasn't tough, didn't even use mend. Glad I came at 46, at least I got two levels while sitting here counting and naming the bricks in lower guk. Suggest breaking from the hall with the trap floor, NOT from elder's room (the pit with the ladder).
