[edit] Extra

I'm currently working on a rework of the SoulFire quest walkthrough here on the p99 wiki. Rather than disrupt its current flow, I'm building my new walkthrough here. I wouldn't waste my time reading it, if I were you, but I can't stop you either, so enjoy the read if you want to experience it for yourself. haha

[edit] Chapter 1: The Investigation Begins

The quest begins as a favor for Kalatrina Plossen. Speak to Kalatrina Plossen, who is in the Hall of Truth in North Freeport.

You say, 'Hail, Kalatrina Plossen'

Kalatrina Plossen says, 'Hail! Welcome to the Hall of Truth. We. the Knights of Truth. are all the hope this city has of loosening the grip of Lucan D'lere and his militia. I seek a young knight to [serve the will of the Truthbringer].'

You say, 'I serve the will of the Truthbringer.'

Kalatrina Plossen says, 'Stand tall then, knight! We have need of your services. We have sent a man to infiltrate the militia. We fear he may soon be found out. Take him this note of warning. Say the words, 'Truth is good,' and you shall find him. Be careful, young knight. The militia does not take prisoners.'

She hands you A Sealed Letter to deliver.

The letter reads: Please return home at once. Mother is not well! Your Father, Mithmar

The spy in the Militia is Guard Alayle, who can be found in the backyard behind the Militia House in West Freeport. Speak to Guard Alayle.

You say, 'Hail, Guard Alayle'

Guard Alayle says, 'Greetings, citizen! You should not be in the Militia House. These are restricted grounds. Please leave at once unless you have business here.'

You say, 'Truth is good.'

Guard Alayle says, 'Ssshhh!! Pipe down. The others might hear you. You must have something for me. Kalatrina must have given you something if you serve the Hall of Truth. If you have nothing please leave. You will blow my cover.'

Give him the A Sealed Letter that Kalatrina gave you.

Guard Alayle says, 'This is not good news. I must leave immediately. Here. Take this to Kala.. I mean my father. I found it on the floor of Sir Lucan DLeres quarters. Thanks again, messenger. I got this just in time.'

Guard Alayle will hand you a note called A Tattered Flier to return to Kalatrina Plossen.

The contents of the A Tattered Flier is just: ZIMEL’S BLADES, and then several periods/ellipses in a particular pattern, suggesting a code, maybe.

At this point, another guard, Krazen Loosh, will approach Guard Alayle, ominously.

Krazen Loosh says 'Hello, Alayle. We just got a message from Qeynos. I think you should come with me.'

Krazen Loosh says 'As you try to open penetrate the stone wall it is clearly being held in place by a powerful force.'

Guard Alayle says 'Oh no!! It is too late!! Run!!'

Alas, after a short skirmish, you can expect to see Guard Alayle lose.

Guard Alayle has been slain by Krazen Loosh!

You say, 'Hail, Krazen Loosh'

Krazen Loosh says, 'The towering wall of stone is clearly unmovable at this point, being held in place by collection of magical energies.'

Note: I have no idea what Krazen Loosh is talking about with the towering wall of stone. No other source seems to follow up on it either. I imagine we should just ignore it.

WARNING: The intended next step is to return the ‘’A Tattered Flier’’ to Kalatrina, but the quest is slightly bugged at this point. If you turn in the flier, Kalatrina does not return it back to you, despite it being needed again two steps later. You can either skip this turn-in (and the next step), or do the turn-in to Guard Alayle one extra time to get another flier. If you do turn in the flier, this is what happens next.

Kalatrina Plossen says, 'Zimel's Blades?! Hmmmmm. It doesn't ring a bell and the remainder of the writing is too hard to make out. It kind of looks like a list of prices. You know, down at the Office of the People they might be able to tell us if this place exists. Go speak with Rashinda. She knows all about Freeport. If [Zimel's Blades] existed, you must report back to me what happened to it.'

Rashinda Elore can be found at the Office of Landholders, listed as 1 on the North Freeport map. Only on a sign outside does this building say Office of the People. Speak to her to ask her about Zimel’s Blades. Rashinda is on the second floor.

You say, 'Hail, Rashinda Elore'

Rashinda Elore says, 'Hello. I am Rashinda Elore. The city Landholder Manager. If you have business to discuss, please direct it to my two clerks downstairs. Good day.'

You say, 'Have you heard of Zimel's Blades?'

Rashinda Elore says, 'Zimel's Blades? It used to be a fine place of rare weaponry. [Ariska Zimel] was the owner. No one knows what happened to the man. He just vanished overnight. His shop used to be in East Freeport which is now a slum, er, I mean, which now has plenty of available lots for sale with plenty of potential. As for Zimel's Blades, we [condemned] it.'

You say, 'Why was it condemned?'

Rashinda Elore says, 'About a week after Ariska Zimel's disappearance, strange noises were heard from his shop. Loud booms and rumbling as though the earth itself were exploding. When the militia got to the shop, they said the shop was badly burned by an exploding boiler. They had us condemn the building due to its unsafe structure.'

You say, 'Who is Ariska Zimel?'

Rashinda Elore says, 'Ariska Zimel was a human blacksmith, a master when it came to making swords, I hear. He kept to himself a lot. He disappeared about one year ago. A lot of people were disappointed when we had to condemn Zimel's Blades. All the merchandise was handed over to [Groflah Steadirt]. Mostly charred junk.'

You say, 'Who is Groflah Steadirt?'

Rashinda Elore says, 'Groflah Steadirt is the dwarven owner of Groflah's Forge which is right near here. He was Ariska Zimel's best friend. They were apparently avid travelers before settling down here in Freeport. I guess it was during their travels that they picked up the fine arts of the forge. You should talk to Groflah about Zimel. He can tell you more than I can.'

As Rashinda mentioned, Groflah Steadirt runs the store Groflah's Forge, which is location 4 on the North Freeport map. He's on the second floor of the shop. At this point, you will need another copy of the flier if you turned yours in to Kalatrina Plossen.

You say, 'Hail, Groflah Steadirt'

Groflah Steadirt says, 'Greetings, adventurer! Certainly a person who looks as hardened as yourself deserves a fine blade to match your prowess. Here at Groflah's Forge, we supply you with only the finest quality weapons.'

You say, 'Do you know Ariska Zimel?'

Groflah Steadirt says, 'Zimel!! I do not know who you mean. Now go away. I am very busy. I will not talk here!!'

This is far as the conversation can go without the flier. However, if you hand him the A Tattered Flier, he trusts you a little bit more. Hand him the flier and he responds:

Groflah Steadirt says, 'Where did you find this? This was the main price list of Zimel's Blades, but it should be all burnt up. I was at Zimel's right after the fire and I did not see it hanging where it should have been. The entire inside was gutted and . . . wait . . . the sequence of the dots!! Hmmm. I cannot talk with you here. Meet me at the Seafarer's by the docks at night. Give me the note when next we meet.'

Groflah will return the flier to you for now, but he's now translated the dots for you. When read now, the A Tattered Flier will say: ZIMEL'S BLADES h e l p ... c a p t i v e

Before following Groflah's directions to meet him at Seafarer's Roost, for the full story, you'll want to stop in at the Hall of Truth and inform Kalatrina of what you've just learned.

You say, 'Zimel's Blades was condemned.'

Kalatrina Plossen says, 'Why would Lucan visit a condemned building? He must be searching for something. When I last visited the local forge, I heard rumors of Lucan searching for a sword named Soulfire. If this is true, you must find it first! No more power should go his way. Seek this sword out!'

And thus, you now have been invited to embark on a quest for the legendary Soulfire. The story continues at the Seafarer's Roost, in East Freeport.

[edit] Chapter 2: A Night at the Seafarer's Roost

Groflah Steadirt will spawn on the first floor of the Seafarer's Roost, but he's one of a few different possible patrons, sharing his spawn with Talym Shoontar, Sir Edwin Motte, and Imxil Tbrow. In theory, you probably could kill whatever patron is spawned to try to force Groflah to spawn, but I didn't want to hurt my faction and so waited for him to spawn naturally.

Note: There seems to be some discrepancy with my experience vs how the quest is supposed to go. Groflah suggests that you have to meet with him at night at Seafarer's Roost, and that that is the occasion when you get the updated A Tattered Flier that translates the dots for you. As mentioned above, I received the translated flier when I spoke to Groflah at his store, and I managed to find Groflah at Seafarer's Roost during the day (9am game time). He gave me the correct dialogue, but he ate my flier instead of giving it back to me with the translation, probably since I already had the translated flier. Here is the dialogue that followed when I met with Groflah that morning.

You say, 'Hail, Groflah Steadirt'

Groflah Steadirt says, 'Greetings, _____! Join in the [celebration]! Have a few drinks. Alas, there are no [Tumpy Tonics].'

You say, 'Who is Ariska Zimel?'

Groflah Steadirt says, 'Ariska Zimel was my best friend. He and I learned our knowledge of metal from such places as Halas and Kaladim. When he disappeared, it seemed to involve foul play. He must be alive somewhere in the city. I pray this is not the work of [Pietro Zarn].'

You say, 'Who is Pietro Zarn?'

Groflah Steadirt says, 'While we were traveling through the Lavastorm Mountains, we happened upon a caravan. They wore emblems in honor of the evil god, Innoruuk. They did not see us, but we saw them. And most importantly of all, Ariska saw the apparent leader's sword. It was glowing with great energy. Suddenly, the evil knights were in a battle. The knights gave chase, leaving their camp unattended. The knight who owned the sword left it behind, opting to fight with another, leading me to believe it was not his to begin with. It was at this point that Ariska ran down and grabbed the sword. A few weeks later, we were to learn that the knight was a powerful man by the name of Pietro Zarn and that he was looking for a sword stolen from him. He called it .. Soulfire. I believe Zarn must have finally found Ariska.'

BONUS LORE INFORMATION: This is the last step involving Groflah Steadirt. It seems that at the end of this interaction, or at some other undetermined time, Groflah is supposed to end up with the flier (in my case he did because he ate mine, but he's supposed to give it back, so I don't know when it gets back to him). After Groflah has finished helping you in this capacity, the next we hear of him, he winds up murdered, in the quest Groflah Steadirt's Death, a quest for necros and SKs to kill him and take the flier from his corpse, as the Dismal Rage tries to catch up to...well, you, before you find Soulfire.

There is a new lead to be discovered "incidentally" at Seafarer's Roost, from Tykar Renlin, a beggar that sometimes frequents the bar. He is supposed to hear Branis Noolright play a song about Sir Lucan D'Lere, or overhear you "discussing" Zimel with Groflah. If both Tykar and Branis are up, Branis may choose to play a song that mentions Sir Lucan D'Lere, causing Tykar to get upset and mention Zimel. Other sources suggest you should be able to say "Zimel" near Tykar with no other NPC targeted to get him to mention he knows Zimel. I couldn't get this to work however. In the end, it's easiest to just hail him and ask about Zimel directly, rather than wait for any of the specific occasions with the NPCs.

Tykar Renlin is also on a cycling spawn table of patrons, sharing his spawn with Plnorrick Spinecracker, Biggle Limbokker, Tlin Bowfright, and Lozani. Again, you probably could kill these other NPCs to try to force Tykar's spawn, but I waited for it naturally since I didn't want everyone in Seafarer's Roost to hate me.
I managed to get Tykar and Branis Noolright to spawn together, in order to get the dialogue of Branis singing his song and Tykar responding angrily about Lucan. However, apparently Imxil Tbrow also has responsive dialogue, and the game chose hers instead of Tykar's. At this point I just decided to hail Tykar directly and move forward with the quest.

You say, 'Hail, Tykar Renlin'

Tykar Renlin says, 'Do you have any spare coppers for a thirsty soul?'

You say, 'Who is Ariska Zimel?'

Tykar Renlin says, 'What?! You know my friend Zimel?! I would like to speak of him, but my mouth is so parched. Maybe a fine grog would loosen my lips. I am uncertain which flavor shall do the trick.'

The drink that Tykar ends up settling on is Drom's Champagne, so give him four of these unstacked. You can purchase these from the bartender, Gregor Nasin, or the waitress, Henna Treghost.

Tykar Renlin says, 'Oooh!! That is the taste. My lips are almost loose. Maybe another will do the trick.'

Tykar Renlin says, 'Oooh!! That is the taste. My lips are almost loose. Maybe another will do the trick.'

Tykar Renlin says, 'Oooh!! That is the taste. My lips are almost loose. Maybe another will do the trick.'

Tykar Renlin says, 'Ahh!! That was good. Now where were we?. Oh yes. My friend Zimel is a fellow beggar. He was locked up in the arena. They were going to let him go when the Freeport Militia came for him. Ha!! He is crazy as a troll now. I took this blanket from his cell before I was released. I no longer need it and my guilt has reached its peak. I do not want crazy old Zimel to freeze. Perhaps you can return it to him.'

Tykar will hand you Bunker Cell No 1, a blanket to give to Zimel when you find him.

[edit] Chapter 3: Tunaria's Corridor

It's time to meet Ariska Zimel himself, a man named only a prisoner in-game. He can be found in the jail under the Arena in West Freeport, and he is the only prisoner in the cells down there, so he's easy to identify. Here's his dialogue, but see the next couple steps before you turn in your blanket, lest you waste it and have to get a new one from Tykar.

You say, 'Hail, a prisoner'

a prisoner says, 'Aaaarghhh!!.. Buggl n gump.. Figgle and fump..'

You say, 'Who is Ariska Zimel?'

a prisoner stares deeply into your eyes.. Very eerie!!

Turning in the Bunker Cell No 1 at this point will yield you merely a clue about other items Zimel wants, and he will eat your blanket so you need a new one. My recommendation is to skip to the next step and bring all three items to him at once, rather than suffer through the Seafarer's Roost again. If you do give him the blanket, this is his clue.

a prisoner says, 'Bog n Goo.. Blanket too!!'

The items he is referring to are some food and drink. Namely, Bog Juice and Edible Goo. Ah, the classic EverQuest meal! Turning in the juice, goo, and blanket will progress you to the next step.

Time to do some Brewing and Baking! Both Bog Juice and Edible Goo have trivial 21 in their respective tradeskills, and they're fairly simple to make.
Bog Juice is just Snake Scales from any snake, and the purchased items Bottle and Water Flask, combined in any Brew Barrel.
Edible Goo is even simpler, and is just a Fire Beetle Eye and Rat Ears combined in any Stove.

Once you have the Bunker Cell No 1, Bog Juice, and Edible Goo, give all three items to him at once to get the next piece of dialogue and the next item.

a prisoner says, 'Bog n Goo.. Blanket too!!'

a prisoner says, 'Bog n Goo.. Blanket too!!'

a prisoner hands you something and says, Hide, hide, safe, cee.. lerk has the clue.. Must travel.. Travel.. Travel.. Tunaria's corridor..

He will hand you H. K. 102, a key

As you can probably guess from the key's name, the next stop is High Keep, where it seems Zimel was keeping a lockbox. Head to see Bank Clerk Jaylin in the High Keep basement.

You say, 'Hail'

Bank Clerk Jaylin says, 'Greetings! I am Jaylen Monel your Highkeep bank clerk. If you are here to close an account please return your strongbox key and I will return any items you may have in them. '

As she says, go ahead and hand her the H. K. 102 key.

Bank Clerk Jaylin says, 'I am sorry to see you check out. Here is all you had in your box. We hope to serve you again. Have a nice day!! Next.'

You receive 6 gold, 11 silver, 16 copper pieces.

You also are handed A Sealed Note with the next clue about where to go.

The note reads: Ariska, For your great service to the Temple of Life I shall honor your request and hold Soulfire until I see this note presented to me by either you or a noble courier of the Hall of Truth. Brother Hayle.

While the note might suggest that he is at either the Temple of Life or the Hall of Truth, Brother Hayle is actually imprisoned in Splitpaw Lair. Once you hand in the A Sealed Note, he's going to send you on a complex, high-level errand run. So you may want to gather the other materials first before going down into Splitpaw to do this initial turn-in.

You say, 'Hail, Brother Hayle'

Brother Hayle says, 'This is no place for you. These Splitpaws are very fierce. Only the power of Rodcet Nife will guide them to the light. By the way, I might warn you that the cells here lock behind you.'

Hand him the A Sealed Note.

Brother Hayle says, 'Finally!! I see that Ariska has found a noble knight to retrieve Soulfire. Per Ariska's orders I am not to give Soulfire to you until you can show me [proof of nobility]. You must honor both the Temple of Life as well as the Hall of Truth and to a high degree. Only then shall you hold Soulfire.'

You gain party experience!!

[edit] Chapter 4: The Captive Cleric
